Description
The Gripsholm was built in Newcastle by Armstrong Whitworth for the Svenska Amerika Linien, and delivered in 1925. She was the first Atlantic passenger liner to be powered by diesel engines, as she was fitted with two diesels from B&W. During World War II she was operated by the International Red Cross and used for repatriation of citizens who had ended up in warring countries and for repatriation of prisoners of war. Returned to her owners in 1946. Rebuilt in 1949-50 and sold to Norddeutscher Lloyd in 1954 and renamed Berlin. Sold for scrapping in 1966.
