Notizie storico-critiche: Il ritratto in oggetto raffigura Vittorio Emanuele I di Savoia (Torino, 1759-Moncalieri, 1824), detto il Tenacissimo, secondo figlio di Vittorio Amedeo III e dell'Infanta di Spagna Maria Antonietta di Borbone. Divenne re solo nel 1802 all'abdicazione del fratello maggiore Carlo Emanuele IV. Ritornò in Piemonte solo dopo la sconfitta di Napoleone nel 1814 e il successivo Congresso di Vienna (1814-1815); attuò una serie di provvedimenti in favore del ripristino degli ordinamenti precedenti. Il dipinto è giunto all'Accademia Carrara nel 2011 come donazione di Michel Bugnion di Losanna insieme ad altri sedici ritratti di personaggi di re, regine e dignitari di casa Savoia. In precedenza il collezionista aveva lasciato alla città di Losanna la villa dell'Hermitage e una parte del suo patrimonio per la creazione di una fondazione d'arte e in questa sede si svolse nel 2011 una mostra di capolavori dell'Accademia Carrara, che fu l'occasione per il lascito al museo bergamasco. I personaggi raffigurati nei ritratti sono identificabili talvolta in base a iscrizioni presenti sui dipinti stessi o sul confronto con ritratti dinastici conservati ancor oggi nelle antiche residenze reali di Torino.
