Summary

[edit]
Description

Built 1956 and delivered to 49 Sqn at Wittering. She would serve with no other operational unit for her entire career. She was one of eight Valiants converted for testing Britain’s first thermo-nuclear fusion device (the H-bomb) as part of Operation ‘Grapple’. She was the initial conversion and first flew out to Christmas Island in March 1957. On 15th May 1957 she dropped Britain’s first live H-bomb. Trials continued until the ‘Grapple’ tests ended in December 1958. The aircraft were then converted back to standard bombing configuration and in July 1961 she was further converted to a tanker capable B(K)1 variant. The entire Valiant fleet was grounded in December 1964 due to wing spar fatigue issues and was later scrapped. XD818, by now the only surviving Valiant, was retained at Marham and placed on display at the main gate. Well looked after, she remained there until 1982 when she was moved to the Bomber Command Museum at Hendon and repainted in anti-flash white. In 2005 she was relocated to Cosford where she remains on display as part of the National Cold War Exhibition. RAF Museum, Cosford, Shropshire, UK.
