Summary

[edit]
Description
English: Viaducts at Chirk. In the foreground is the aqueduct carrying the Shropshire Union Canal over the Ceiriog valley, built between 1796 to 1801 by Thomas Telford. It is 70 feet tall and has ten arches. In the background is the railway viaduct, which was built in 1846 and is 30 feet higher. There is no physical reason why the railway should be higher, but the builders decided to ramp the line up each side merely to show dominance over the canal. The viaducts also span the border between England on the left and Wales on the right.
