Text Appearing Before Image:
Fig. 123. Recent fracture of first rib. Fig. 124. Sound first rib, and fractured first rib undergoing repair.
Text Appearing After Image:
Fig. 125. Pair of first ribs ; one sound, the other united after fracture. Fig. 126. Pair of first ribs ; both united after fracture. DEOPPED ELBOW. 313 rib, than cart horses which have to toil at a walk. It is evidentthat la forward plunge, with one shoulder more in advance thanthe other shoulder, would be more likely to cause this accidentthan if both shoulders met the collar simultaneously. A horsewhich has fractured the first rib on one side will, occasionally, after recovery, repeat the operation on the other side. Here, thememory of the pain does not cure the vice, but only reminds theanimal that he must not practise it on the side which wasinjured. Figs. 123, 124, 125, and 126, which are reproductionsof photographs I took from specimens very kindly lent to me byMr. Willis, show these fractures. Increased thickness of bone dueto fracture, is well marked in these illustrations. Occasionally, saddle horses meet with this accident from fallsand other injuries. SYMPTOMS.—Sudden lam
