Notes Brocade waistcoat (vest) worn by Mr. Longdill (arrived in Auckland 1859)" Pynson Wilmot Longdill of London, England (born circa 1811, died 1875 aged 64 years), came to New Zealand in1859. His sister Emily had married MARTIN KRIPPNER of Mantau, Bohemia. The passenger list for the Maori (left London on 12 July 1859 and arrived in Auckland on 3 November 1859), included Pynson W Longdill, his wife Harriet, together with George, Edward and Mary Longdill, (New Zealander 5 November 1859). Pynson Longdill’s sister Emily is recorded as arriving with her husband Martin Krippner of Mantau, Bohemia, and two other families from Bohemia, aboard the Lord Burleigh which sailed from England on the 18th November 1859 with 123 passengers. The party arrived in Auckland on 22nd March 1860. The Krippner family and friends formed part of the Bohemian settlement at Puhoi. He later joined the 3rd Waikato Militia and was granted land near Ohaupo in the Waikato. Martin Krippner’s NZDB biographer suggests that the decision to settle in New Zealand, rather than America, may have been influenced by Pynson Longdill’s decision to settle in this country. Pynson Longdill and his family set up home in Parnell, Auckland. In 1864 he is recorded as having received a crown grant, and in 1869 he is listed as one of the share-holders of the Golden Harp Gold Mining Company, Thames. His son, Mr. Charles Pynson Wilmot Longdill born in Parnell, Auckland in 1866, has an entry as a businessman in the Taihape section of the Cyclopedia of Ne3w Zealand (1902). This entry describes. his father, Mr. Pynson Wilmott Longdill, as a “gentleman of wide learning, who migrated from England to Auckland with a wife and young family”.
