nts. Theoriginal decorations have entirely disappeared, and at present,as a part of the palace museum, the Hall of the Guards is de-voted to Napoleon and the glories of the First Empire. Thishall was the first chapel of the chateau from 1670 to 1682, atwhich date the second chapel was constructed to the northof the royal court on the site of the present salon of Hercules.In the Grand Hall of the Guards, Louis XIV washed the feetof the poor each year on Holy Thursday. From this hall a handsome passage led to the large salonconnecting the central portion of the chateau with the southwing. There certain shopkeepers, who had bought the priv-ilege, had their booths in which they sold, for the conve-nience of the courtiers, books, stationery, watches, jewelry,toilet articles, and perfumery; and this fact gave the roomits name, the salon of Shopkeepers. Under Louis XIV thesepeople were kept within limits, but at a later period theyspread themselves on the landings of the staircases and in 46
