Verny Commemorative Museum, Yokosuka, Kanagawa, Japan

Summary

[edit]
Description
English: The Verny Commemorative Museum [1] is a small museum located in Verny Park [2] near JR Yokosuka Station in Yokosuka, Japan. The museum and the park are named after the French naval engineer François Léonce Verny' (December 2, 1837 - May 2, 1908) [3] in appreciation for his great contribution to the modernization of Japan after the end of its isolation. Verny came to Japan in the final days of the Tokugawa Shogunate and in 1865 administered the construction of Yokosuka Naval Arsenal. He himself managed the arsenal from 1866 until the new Meiji government takes over the project. At the time of this collaboration, the techniques of French shipbuilding and innovations for the production of metal hulls were introduced. A huge steam-hammer originally made in Holland and then imported to Japan from France in 1866 is exhibited at the museum. Yokosuka City commemorates his memory each year in November.
