D’après le tableau présenté par Jean-Baptiste Vermay au Salon de 1812 (numéro 945 du livret), sous le titre Marguerite de Navarre, avec la description : "Marguerite, reine de Navarre, est surprise par François Ier son frère, au moment où elle lit la ballade commençant par Amour me voyant sans tristesse."

Reproduit dans les Annales du Musée et de l'école moderne des beaux-arts - Salon de 1812, vol. 1, de Charles Landon, planche 36, p. 53-54, avec un titre décrivant mieux la scène : Marguerite de Navarre recevant de Clément Marot une ballade qu'il avait composée pour cette princesse.

Marguerite de Navarre, vêtue de velours rouge, est debout au centre ; elle tient à la main un papier sur lequel est écrit les vers Amour me voyant sans tristesse que vient de lui remettre le poète Clément Marot, vêtu de vert, assis au bureau devant la fenêtre, à droite. À l'arrière-plan, à gauche, le roi François Ier, entre dans la pièce en surprenant le couple.
