Summary

[edit]
Description
English: Built in 1972-1975, this Modern seven-story office building was designed by James T. Potter of Potter, Lawson, Findlay and Pawlowsky, Inc., now known as Potter Lawson Architects, and was originally home to the Continental Mortgage Insurance Company, through it is now known as Verex Plaza. The building features horizontal bands of ribbon windows with opaque metal spandrel panels obscured behind cantilevered screens that help keep direct sunlight out of the building’s interior during the summer to reduce thermal gain, which are absent on the side of the building facing Lake Mendota to allow unobstructed views of the lake, circular concrete columns, a distinct shape with multiple pointed corners where the exterior walls meet at acute angles, owing to the irregular site of the building between the shore of Lake Mendota and the eastern terminus of Gilman Street, an entry plaza with concrete planters and brick pavers, a two-story concrete base that is not fully visible except from Lake Mendota, which tapers towards the lake, and a low-slope roof with a central penthouse that houses mechanical equipment. The building is an excellent example of late modernism designed by a significant architect, but owing to its relatively recent construction is a noncontributing structure in the Mansion Hill Historic District, listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1997.
