Summary

[edit]
Description Introduced, warm season, biennial herb; initially forming a rosette of leaves which then elongate along a stout flowering stem 0.5-2 m tall. Leaves are yellowish to blue-grey and densely woolly; basal leaves are up to 50 cm long. Flowers are yellow, 1.5-3 cm across and occur in dense racemes 15-100 cm long. Usually germinates in autumn or spring and flowering is from spring to autumn of the 2nd year. Commonly found on lighter soils, near roadsides and other disturbed areas and within heavily grazed pastures. Weed that produces numerous long-lived seeds. Suspected of being poisonous, but unpalatable and not normally grazed. Management may require a combination of methods, including: pasture improvement, increased soil fertility, maintenance of ground cover by not overgrazing (especially on lighter soils), chipping and herbicides. When physically removing plants, ensure to remove as much of the taproot as possible.
