Summary

[edit]
Description
English: The sculpture, slightly over life-size, was found between 1667 and 1670 near the Basilica of San Vitale, between the Quirinal and the Viminal Hills. It was donated to the Capitoline Museums by Benedict XIV in 1752. It is an Antonine copy of a late Hellenistic sculpture that ultimately derives from the Cnidian Aphrodite of Praxitiles, now lost. It belongs to the type of Venus Pudica (modest Venus). The type is recognisable from the position of the arms—standing after a bath, Venus begins to cover her breasts with her right hand, and her groin with her left hand.

Marble. cm 193 From Viminal Hill.
