Description

Venus and Mercury over the Birkenhead skyline, Merseyside, England. Photo taken from Pier Head, Liverpool at an opportune time with favourable viewing conditions for the usually difficult to spot planet Mercury. Two days after maximum eastern elongation* coupled with the fact Venus was nearby making it far easier than usual to locate Mercury in the south-western early evening sky. Nevertheless as expected Venus is by far the easiest of the two to spot in this photo with less prominent Mercury somewhat to the right. The innermost planet is barely visible on the lower resolution image previews although can be seen much easier as a few pixels of white on the full resolution original image. Mercury will rapidly fade into the glare of the Sun in a few days time.

*A few days before maximum eastern elongation is an even better time to view Mercury as it is then brighter due to having a larger illuminated area as seen from Earth (slightly gibbous phase). Alas I did not have my camera with me at that time when Mercury was at its brightest. In the above photo taken after eastern elongation, the illuminated area has reduced to slightly less than half of the planet's disk.
