Description |
Italiano: Vetrata rinascimentale (sec. XV) con San Giorgio e due santi guerrieri, nella Basilica dei santi Giovanni e Paolo a Venezia. ] English: in "Santi Giovanni e Paolo" Basilica, Venice. Additional information: The Saints John (Giovanni) and Paul (Paolo) depicted in this window and after whom the church is named are not the two 1st century apostles but are two Roman soldiers who were martyred and whose remains were later transferred from the catacombs of Rome to Venice, along with the much-more-famous Santa Lucia from Sicily (whose church was later demolished to make way for the railway station) and many several others. The knight slaying the dragon may be George, but the Venetians also venerate Theodore, another dragon-slayer. The painting of the right hand figure is badly deteriorated. Despite the fame of Venice as a producer of colourful glassware, large Venetian-made windows such as this one are uncommon and this one contains some of the earliest stained glass in Venice. |
