arlyage upon young Diego de Silva Velazquez—the second name by which he is univer-sally known belonged to his mothers family•—almost before he was in his teens hewas working in the studio of Francisco deHerrera, architect and painter. The tem-peraments of master and pupil could notfuse; there was sufficient trouble to leadDon Juan Rodriguez to transfer his sonsservices to Francesco Pacheco, painter, poet,professor, and withal a man of action andexperience. He knew much about con-temporary art, encouraged a hopeful outlookupon life, and enjoyed the respect of all men.Moreover his studio was the meeting-placefor many of the distinguished folk of thecity. It is thework of the painters last period, and shows us the little son ofPhilip IV. by his second wife.
