arlyage upon young Diego de Silva Velazquez—the second name by which he is univer-sally known belonged to his mothers family•—almost before he was in his teens hewas working in the studio of Francisco deHerrera, architect and painter. The tem-peraments of master and pupil could notfuse; there was sufficient trouble to leadDon Juan Rodriguez to transfer his sonsservices to Francesco Pacheco, painter, poet,professor, and withal a man of action andexperience. He knew much about con-temporary art, encouraged a hopeful outlookupon life, and enjoyed the respect of all men.Moreover his studio was the meeting-placefor many of the distinguished folk of thecity. VELAZQUEZ 25 elation Pacheco understood that his youngpupil was not like other lads, that hepossessed an individuality that could notbe repressed or directed into the usualchannels/ and instead of resenting this newelement, he sought to direct it wisely andkindly, thereby laying Velazquez under adebt of gratitude that the painter neverrepudiated. Indeed there were strongerties in the making, for in the spring of 1618,when the young artist was on the thresholdof his wonderful career, Pacheco gave himhis daughter Juana for wife, encouraged,he says, by his virtues, his fine qualities,and the hopes which his happy nature andgreat talent raised in me.
