Summary

[edit]
Description

English: The territory of Cellino Attanasio (TE) ITALY, 44 square kilometers wide, preserves evidence of attendance starting from the Bronze Age. The presence of a vicus and rustic villas in various locations is documented in Roman times. At first property of the Benedictines of the abbey of San Giovanni in Venere, it was then a fief of the Acquaviva, dukes of Atri who held it almost continuously from the late fourteenth century until their disappearance in the eighteenth century. They fortified it by equipping it with nine intermediate and corner cylindrical towers of which only two remain in good condition, while there are still traces of a previous fortification with escarpment walls and intermediate turrets.

In 1462 it underwent the siege of the Angevin Matteo di Capua, who came to fight the local feudal lord Giosia Acquaviva, linked to the Aragonese dynasty. In 1485-1486 he supported and repelled the attack of Ascanio Colonna, legitimized by King Ferdinand I of Naples to take possession of the duchy.

On December 8, 1798 he entered the country of the French republican army.
