Description

Tagus river boats, Lisbon, Portugal

Collection: Câmara Municipal da Moita

A boat with a flat bottom, a long helm, an open stern and a round elongated prow with bends back on itself.

Its mast leans toward the stern where a square lateen sail with a yard hangs. A headsail can be found at the prow.

The "Varino" navigates with a crew of three members, one master and comrades. For years, this type of boat transported cork, sand, salt and firewood.

It was also used for loading and offloading the cargo of other ships , as its flat bottom mean that the boat could collect cargo from areas inaccessible to frigates.
