Notes | The use of red, black and white chalk for facial studies is a technique that Van Dyck learnt from his master Rubens, whose drawings of individuals such as his wife Isabella Brant (also in the BM, inv.1893,0731.21). Van Dyck did not frequently deploy this trois-crayons technique and instead later favoured the use of blue paper with black chalk and white [1] | ||||||||||||||||||||||||
