D PIETEK BRUEGHEL III Flemish: 15(54—1(534; 1589—1638No. 27—LANDSCAPE WITH FIGURES (Panel) Height, 24:V; indies; length, 40:; ( inches The landscape, painted by l)c Momper, shows on theright of the foreground a rocky hank crowned with aclump of oaks, from which a pathway descends. Fartherhack is a hillside, covered with fir trees, and beyond thissweeps a view of valley, cut by a winding stream. Thevista terminates in ranges of blue mountains. The fig-ures, supplied by Brueghel, include a woman and childapproaching by the pathway, on the right, a group thatis composed in the foreground. The center is occupiedby a woman in red cloak and blue skirt, accompaniedby a spaniel. She stands near an ass, laden with pan-niers, in each of which is a baby. On the right are dis-posed a man, a child and two women, one of the lat-ter being engaged in washing linen. Balancing theseon the left of the foreground is a man holding an ass,while its saddle panniers lie on the ground beside a redcloak.

On the edge of the farther shore risesa walled city surrounding a cathedral, while farther hacka mountain range shows faintly against the sky. The mid-dle distance is filled with brown, green and yellow treesin which buildings are embosomed. On the left of theforeground, Ahraham has grasped the kneeling Isaac,hut turns to find his uplifted sword arrested by a float-ing angel.
