También conocido como valle de Marte, el Valle de la Muerte esta en medio de la Cordillera de la Sal, a tan solo 2 kilómetros de San Pedro de Atacama. Su nombre se debe a que antiguamente, quien osaba cruzar este valle moría en el intento. Prueba de esto son los restos de huesos de animales o de personas que se pueden hallar en el lugar, además de trozos de yeso naturales que muchas veces son confundidos con estos vestigios. Se caracteriza por poseer extrañas formaciones geomórficas y topográficas donde abundan rocosas esculturas naturales y dunas de arena. Este lugar además es un claro ejemplo de lo árido que puede ser el desierto de Atacama, pues aquí no crece ningún tipo de planta o insecto. Por esta última razón es que muchos han catalogado el Valle de la Muerte como el lugar más inhóspito del planeta, aunque para fines recreativos, sus dunas de arena son muy apreciadas por quienes practican Trekking y sandboard.
