Description
Manuel del Campo Yávar (18..-1898) fue un abogado, poeta y periodista chileno; tuvo puestos diplomáticos (cónsul en Washington y adjunto de la legación en Uruguay), trabajó en la intendencia de Mulchén (1888) y en 1896 ocupó la secretaría de la municipalidad de Valparaíso; a diferencia de la mayoría de sus hermanos, fue balmacedista, como su hermano Enrique, a quien también retrató Valenzuela Puelma; "ambos libraron memorables campañas a favor de los caídos" en la guerra civil de 1891. El retrato está pintado en 1897, un año antes de su muerte y en el mismo en que triunfó con sus versos en las fiestas cívicas en honor al Brasil (datos del Diccionario histórico y biográfico de Chile, t.2, p. 325-326, Establecimientos gráficos Balcells & Co, Santiago, 1928, de Virgilio Figueroa).

Notes A pesar de la inscripción hecha por el autor, tanto el Catálogo de obras en exhibición como el álbum Alfredo Valenzuela Puelma. El rigor de la Academia, colección Pintura Chilena del Siglo XIX de Origo Ediciones, 2008, p.63 titulan erróneamente el cuadro Retrato de Santiago del Campo (desaparece la "M." de Manuel y surge el nombre de "Santiago")
