Summary

[edit]
Description

British WW2 era Infantry Tank Official designation:- Tank, Infantry, Mark III, Valentine Manufacturer:- Vickers-Armstrong Built:- 1940-1944 Total production:- 8,275 In service from 1940 to 1960 Main armament:- QF 2-pounder The Valentine accounted for a quarter of all tanks produced in the UK during WW2. It was used extensively during the North Africa campaign and gained a reputation for being reliable and well protected. It also served in Europe, Madagascar and the south-west Pacific campaign where it was operated by the 3rd New Zealand Division. It was supplied in large numbers to the Soviet Union under lend-lease arrangements and was also produced in Canada under license. The Mark II appeared in 1941 and had a 6-cylinder AEC A190 diesel which had lower gearing to improve torque. It also introduced an additional external fuel tank near the left side of the engine compartment, which would become a trademark of the Valentine. This example has no known service history and was possibly recovered from a firing range. It is now part of the Imperial War Museum collection and is seen on display in the Land Warfare Hall at Duxford Airfield, Cambridgeshire, UK.
