English: Project 365 -210- 290723 A Heritage Day. Today saw a trip to historic Porvoo.
We always go by bus to Porvoo, as it isn't served by rail, except it sort of is: on selected dates in the summer the Finnish Railway Museum operates a train of historic railcars from Helsinki to Porvoo. The route follows the main line part of the way, then branches onto a line that is used only for freight. From there it branches onto a preserved rail line that hasn't been modernised, but that runs into Porvoo. The hardware is interesting, consisting of three powered railcars plus a trailer all from the 1950s and built under licence in the Valmet factory in Finland. They're based on Swedish railcars, and for power use an engine based on a Scania unit, being a normally aspirated 8.1 litre straight eight producing 180hp. Unfortunately it was one of the last runs of the season and lots of people return to work on Monday so it was RAMMED. Still a fun way to travel. And as a very special bonus, which I regret I couldn't capture a photo of, as we approached Porvoo the historic Aero DC3 flew over us. Beautiful to see it still flying! |
