ractive garden scene, the informalsocial conversation between a groupof visitors and an Exhibit man direct-ing the conversation, the substitutionof mannequins for the visitors, andthe high-fidelity reproduction of theconversation made a diverting showwhich attracted audiences of livelyinterest. At the opening of the Fair the pub-lic seemed to appraise Audition assomething of a stunt. But almost im-mediately it came to be regarded asan entertaining event by everyone,and as an experience of direct per-sonal benefit by many of those whoparticipated. Again and again individuals whohad been unsuccessful in winning achance to participate requested thatthey be permitted to try it. The re-quests came from teachers, clergy-men, vocal students, lawyers, doctors,from those with impediments ofspeech, from those who consideredthe opportunity of hearing such anaccurate recording of their voices ashelpful in their occupations, and fromthose who regarded Audition as ameans to better habits of speech.
