AUDITION 1 HEARING THEMSELVES AS OTHERS HEARD THEM The dummies on the stage appear to be repeating the conversation just completed by agroup now seated at the foot of the garden On rare occasions, instead of agroup of five visitors, one persongifted in the art of pleasing conversa-tion would be given an audition aloneby an Exhibit man. These diversionswere always entertaining. Of course, the purpose of Audi-tion was to give people an opportu-nity to hear how their voices soundin normal conversation. This waspointed out to each group in the shortpreparation period before its auditionand it was urged that the replies tothe interlocutors questions include atleast three or four sentences. Butthere were some groups in which allfive people responded in single wordswhenever possible; the shorter thebetter, they seemed to think. In suchcases the most successful Exhibit man, bombarded by these bullets of brevity,could get nothing but grief for himselfand zero for the audience. Fortun-ately, th
