Summary
[edit]DescriptionVIEW OF A BRIDGE.jpg |
English: Drawing by William Alexander, draughtsman of the Macartney Embassy to China in 1793. View of a stone bridge in the vicinity of the city of Sou-tcheou with city walls in the background. Alexander wrote that he has seen many bridges of such design built from coarse marble during the Embassy's trip from Han-tcheou to Chusan, some of which were very light, and elegant. The temporary ornament over the center of the arch was erected as a compliment to the British Ambassador. Six soldiers are standing on the bridge by way of salute to the Embassy. Image taken from The Costume of China, illustrated in forty-eight coloured engravings, published in London in 1805. |
