Description |
English: A base sherd from a Roman Central Gaulish Les Martres-de-Veyre samian ware plate/bowl, possibly Form Drag 18 or 31 dating to AD 100-125. The remaining sherd consists of part of the foot ring and base of the vessel. The centre of the base rises into a cone with a maker's stamp VTALISM[SF] impressed across the top of the cone at the centre of the interior of the vessel. This is the stamp of the potter Vitalis iii who was active in Les Martres-de-Veyre AD 100-125. The fragment has a pink fabric and is coated in a red slip on both the inside and outside. Similar examples are illustrated in Oswald & Pryce (1920 PL XLVI). Dimensions: length: 96.31mm; height: 33.42mm; weight: 73.89g. Webster (1996:33) writes "The form is transitional between a plate and a bowl. In 18/31 the angle between the wall and the floor is shallower than in 18 but still present. The floor rises in the centre but less markedly than in 31 and 31R." References: Oswald, F. and Pryce, T. Davies 1920.
