[edit]DescriptionVERINAG SPRING IN ANANTNAG DISTRICT, JAMMU AND KASHMIR, INDIA 06.jpg |
English: The enclosed image is of Verinag in Anantnag district of Jammu and Kashmir, India.
It can be categorized under the ‘Rivers of India’. Verinag lies at the entry point of Kashmir valley right after crossing the Jawahar tunnel. There is an octagonal stone basin at Verinag spring and an arcade surrounding it. It is the largest spring in India and the major source of the river Jhelum. This spring never dries up. It was built by Mughal emperor Jahangir. A picturesque garden is there behind the spring which was laid out by emperor Shahjahan. The garden consists of many Chinar trees and also different flower plants. The spring is situated at the bottom of a hill covered by pine and other evergreen trees. Originally it was an irregular spring with water oozing out from different parts; later Jahangir who had great artistic sense turned it into an octagonal beautiful spring with the help of carvers from Iran. The water contained in the spring is crystal blue in colour in which a variety of fishes live. The history of the garden and spring, prose, date of construction of the tank and aqueduct is inscribed in Persian language on the stone walls surrounding the spring. Climate is pleasant here with significant amount of rainfall throughout the year. Average temperature in summer is around 23°C and in winter it is around 6°C. The place is a perfect combination of Hindu and Islam religion and culture. There is a deity of lord Shiva in one of the arch surrounding the spring. The enclosed image is the view of Verinag, water flowing from the spring rising the Jhelum river. |
