Description
English: Aerial photo taken on a sunny summer day in the 1960s of the small town of Vardø in Finnmark county, Norway, located on the island of Vardøya near the Russian border.
  • The picture shows fishing boats, vessels, and quay facilities in the harbor areas of the bay, as well as houses and buildings in the town, including Vardø Church, the town hall, and the school. In the foreground, to the left on Vestøya, is the old ferry dock for the connection across Bussesundet to the mainland. Further back is Vardø County Hospital, built in the 1950s. To the right lies the star-shaped Vardø Fortress, established in 1738, with the coastal radio station Vardø Radio and Vardø Chapel near the cemetery at the edge of the image. In the background, one can see the military area on Vårberget on Austøya, with the radar station now called en:GLOBUS. There are several drying racks for the production of stockfish.
  • The port of Vardø, on the Barents Sea, remains ice-free all year round thanks to the warm North Atlantic drift. Vardø has a tundra climate, that borders on a subarctic climate.

Mot høyre ligger den stjerneformede Vardøhus festning, anlagt i 1738, med kystradiostasjonen no:Vardø Radio og Vardø kapell ved kirkegården i bildekanten. I bakgrunnen kan en se militærområdet på no:Vårberget på Austøya, med radarstasjonen som i dag kalles no:GLOBUS. Flere steder er det fiskehjell for produksjon av tørrfisk (hesjer for utendørstørking av usaltet fisk).
