English: Plate numbered 1; sheet of vignettes copied in reverse after George Cruikshank's 'Phrenological Illustrations' (1826); 'Venération': a fat man staring at an enormous carcass labelled 'Rosbiff'; 'Frayeur': a man in bed frightened by his own clothes hung on a chair, which have the appearance of a seated man; 'Conscience': a maid attempting to sell her master's clothes exclaims, horrified, 'Ah! un shilling.' at the offer of a Jewish man; 'Insensibilité' (not copied from the Phrenological Illustrations): a black man roaringly drunk and with two wooden legs, leaning back in a chair by a fire, holding a pipe and tankard, singing a song about 'petite Polly'.
