[edit]DescriptionUxbridge Underground Station, High Street, Uxbridge - geograph.org.uk - 1779400.jpg |
English: Uxbridge Underground Station, High Street, Uxbridge The station is the terminus for the Uxbridge branches of both the Metropolitan and Piccadilly Lines. It is an attractive example of late art deco styling. The present station was built in 1938. The architect who designed the station was Charles Holden Charles_Holden Worthy of note are the sylised wheel and spring sculptures on the roof either side of the entrance. The semi-circular entrance was to provide for a turning circle for trolleybuses, which had replaced trams in 1936. The small area fenced off in the foreground was where a statue of a mother and children had been installed in 2002, not long before this photo was taken, to mark the visit by the Queen in her Golden Jubilee year. Unfortunately the installation was not robust enough and it had to be re-done, this time with the statue on a plinth. |
