Generic abacus, subitizing and bi-quinary coded numbers.

Summary

[edit]
Description
English: In the upper image (a) the number 18 is represented in two regions (rods); one of them contains 8 counters that are above the subitization limit. To simplify the reading of the abacus we can: either use a different type of counter with a replacement value of, for example, five (b), or subdivide the regions or rods into two zones: one in which a counter takes the value one and the other in which it takes the replacement value five (c,d).
