Summary

[edit]
Description

Native, warm season to yearlong green perennial herb to 1 m tall. Stems and leaves are covered in stinging hairs. Leaves usually lanceolate to narrow-ovate, sometimes to broad-ovate, mostly 2–10 cm long, 1.5–6 cm wide; margins coarsely toothed. Flowerheads are mostly unbranched and longer than petiole, monoecious (with female above the male flowers) or plants apparently dioecious (male and female flowers on different plants).

Flowering occurs over most of the year. Widespread and common in mountain gullies, around stock camps and in waste places, especially where there is elevated soil nitrogen. Native biodiversity. Leaves are edible if cooked. Used to treat arthritus. Unpalatable to stock.
