Summary
[edit]DescriptionUrfa Selahaddin Eyyubi Camii courtyard from northwest 3670.jpg |
English: One of pictures taken on or of the courtyard. I think the building to its east is the former narthex. To the north a building now houses a girls' Quran school.
The mosque is located on Vali Fuat Bey Street (Büyükyol). It is estimated that it was built in the early 19th century on the spot of a Church of John the Baptist, which was built by Bishop Nona in 457. As a church it was the Aziz Johannes Prodromos Addai Kilisesi. It was also called the cathedral because of being the largest church at the time and in the region. The building was in a dilapidated condition for many years and was used as an intermediate power station. On May 28, 1993, it had been repaired and was opened to worship as a mosque. The entrance of the mosque is in the west direction and the last congregation place was built by making use of the narthex (entrance section) of the previous church. The place of worship is illuminated with large windows. On the edges of the windows on the building, there are half columns from the church and dragon reliefs entwined with each other. Since the first church was used as a mosque by Saladin for a while, the building was called after him when it was converted into a mosque. The mosque was repaired by the General Directorate of Foundations in 2010-2011. |
