Summary

[edit]
Description
English: In a rectangular panel at the entrance of a villa scenes from the life of Achilles are shown. The baby Achilles is seen on the lap of a nanny; then his mother tries to make him immortal by immersing him in the river Styx, but forgetting to wet his heels, where ultimately, he will be wounded and killed, then a farewell of Achilles from his mother; next the goddess of fate predicting he’ll die. Then the training by centaur and wise man Chiron, and Thetis watching her son depart to the Trojan war that will be his death. The borders contain scenes of figures playing reeds, farmhouses, running, grazing horses, sheep and bull. I named some recognizable scenes; others are too destroyed.

I seem to be the first to publish pictures of mosaics in the museum here. One walks on glass bridges over the floor, and it is not always possible to get the angle right. As often with mosaics, the light conditions are not always favourable, and I did some post-editing, some of which may need to be improved upon. Some pictures definitely are better than others, the latter I kept in because they, for instance, showed where a certain item was positioned relative to the others. The English language information on the notices left a lot to be desired, I distilled what I thought they meant and used that as captions but may have made mistakes.
