| Description |
Upper Portland signal box by the Up Main line alongside Park Lane level crossing on the outskirts of Kirkby Woodhouse. Saturday 6th June 1987 Upper Portland signal box was a Midland Railway type 3a design fitted with a 20 lever Midland Railway Tumbler frame which opened on 19th March 1905 replacing an 1870s-built signal box located by the signal box's steps. The the lever frame was reduced to 12 levers at sometime, and the signal box closed on 3rd February 1988 when the level crossing was converted to an automatic half-barrier level crossing supervised by Pinxton signal box. After closure the signal box and lever frame were moved into store at the Midland Railway Trust at Butterley but the signal box was further moved to the North Norfolk Railway in the late 1990s and used at Holt where it opened on 27th February 2009 The signal box is fitted with a Midland Railway nameboard showing the name Upper Portland Sidings, but the Sidings part had been dropped by the time the 1931 sectional appendix was published. On of the two roof finials is missing, and some weatherboardng on the flake nearest the steps has been replaced by some lapped boarding |
