Der Schüssel ist eines von insgesamt 13 Benin-Hofkunstwerken, die 1943 vom Rautenstrauch-Joest-Museum (RJM) mit Unterstützung des Dresdner/Hamburger Kunsthändlers Hildebrand Gurlitt im von deutschen Truppen besetzten Paris erworben wurden. Vor diesem Hintergrund lag ein Anfangsverdacht vor, dass die Objekte aus einer beschlagnahmten Sammlung eines jüdischen Sammlers stammen könnten. In Vorbereitung der Ausstellung „Die Schatten der Dinge #1" (11.09.20-11.04.21), wurde die Provenienzforschung für dieses Konvolut durchgeführt. Der Verdacht konnte jedoch weitgehend ausgeschlossen werden.
