1. Tell me Something about Porter — All that you know. Who was he. [and] when [and] how was he killed? Was he Lt. Col of Green’s Regt?

2. Who commanded the men that crossed with [two words unclear]? Where did the 1700 men come from?

Answer (Recollection)

J.C. Porter — aged btwn 30 & 40 — about 6 feet — finely proportioned — magnificent physique — farmer by occupation — brave to rashness. was Lt. Col 2d Regiment of Cavalry (Col M.E. Green), 2d Army Corps. M.S.G. Genl by A. Harris. command Can not remember where he was killed — think he died of wounds received in action. He died after I went to congress.

Glasgow

The men rendezvous’d at Glasgow under my order [and] direction were often in Squads on arrival but out of the mas. I formed 1st the 2nd Regt of Cavalry M.E. Green Col. 2nd a battalion of 1st Regt ” Dv 8 Bunbridge Commanded by Lt Col. E. B. [word unclear] next [and][?] Regt Cavalry (Col Thos. Brnee[?]) next Battalion dismounted (Lt Col B.W. Hawkins) next a skeleton Regiment of Cavalry (Col B.H. Franklin) next a battalion of 1st Regt Inftry (Lt Col S.H. Rawlings) next 1st Battalion 2d Inftry (Major J.W. Robinson) The residue I consolidated in artillery batteries commanded by a post master from Palmyra Mo, whose name I forget, and two squadrons of cavalry for miscellaneous service, under command of — Turner[?] from Columbia Missouri —

Of course the organization I made at Glasgow was temporary my object being to form Skeleton Regt’s to be filled up from time to time as recruits arrived from the different counties to join organizations from their respective localities.
