| Description |
Launched on 9th September 1959, this unmanned Mercury capsule carried out a suborbital test flight lasting 13 minutes and reaching an altitude of 87 miles. It was the first successful launch of the Mercury program and the first to use an Atlas 10D booster rocket. As well as evaluating the booster, the flight also tested the heat-shield, flight dynamics and aerodynamics of the capsule. The capsule was immediately recovered to evaluate the effects of the mission and specifically of the re-entry process. It was transferred to the Smithsonian Institute by NASA in 1967 and is now part of the National Air and Space Museum. It is seen on display in the James S. McDonnell Space Hangar at the Steven F. Udvar Hazy Center Washington Dulles International Airport, Chantilly, Virginia 7th May 2015 |
