Description
Nederlands: Bij deze foto is geen naam bekend. De afgebeelde man is waarschijnlijk de technicus Ookawa. Hij is een van de Japanse marineofficieren die in 1862 naar Nederland komen om de bouw van de Kaiyo-maru te volgen, die in opdracht van de Japanse regering wordt gebouwd. In Nederland volgen zij lessen in zeevaarttechnieken en bezoeken ze bedrijven en instellingen. Hij overlijdt tijdens zijn verblijf in Nederland en wordt in het bijzijn van zijn landgenoten begraven in Amsterdam.
English: The name of the man on this photo is unknown. It is probably Ookawa, a technician. He was one of the Japanese naval officers who came to the Netherlands in 1862 to follow the construction of the steamship Kaiyo-maru, which was being built by order of the Japanese government. In the Netherlands, they took courses in navigation techniques and visited enterprises and institutions. He died during his stay in the Netherlands and was buried in Amsterdam in the presence of his countrymen.
