| Inscription | JÜDISCHER FRIEDHOF Ein jüdischer Friedhof gilt als Haus des Lebens oder Guter Ort, als eine Stätte der Ewigkeit und des Gedenkens. Die Unkeler jüdische Gemeinde konnte ihren Friedhof 1877, drei Jahre nach Einweihung ihrer Synagoge, einrichten. Bis 1940 wurden hier 47 jüdische Personen bestattet. 1941 wurde auf Veranlassung des Unkeler Amtsbürgermeisters und nachfolgende Anweisung durch Regierungspräsident und Landrat dieser Friedhof geschlossen, eingeebnet und zur öffentlichen Bleiche erklärt. Alle Grabsteine warf man in die nahe gelegene ehemalige Kiesgrube. Nach Kriegsende - so heißt es - befahlen die amerikanischen Befreier die Bergung der Grabsteine, von denen jedoch die meisten bis heute verschollen sind. Die acht noch vorhandenen Grabsteine wurden an beliebigen Standorten wieder aufgerichtet. Seit 1988 steht dieser jüdische Friedhof unter Denkmalschutz. Initiativkreis Wider das Vergessen |
