oms. A bronze tablet has been placed in the LawSchool, commemorating this fact. WILLIAM SMITH;S HOUSE AT FALLS CREEK.— William Smith, the first Provost of the University of Pennsyl-vania, lived for many years in a house situated on a bluff orhill which bordered the Falls Creek and the Ridge Road, southof Indian Queen Lane. This spot, known as Smiths Hill, com-manded a beautiful view of the Schuylkill both to the south andto the north. The mansion was occupied by him in 1773, and,with the exception of a few years, he lived there until 1803.Two of the buildings on this estate still remain, although some-what altered. The mansion, an L-shaped house, the main armfacing to the west, is situated on the summit of the hill. Itis substantially built, with a fine porch on its western face,terraces, and a lawn extending towards the bluff. 226 said to have been at one time the home of Benjamin Franklin,the founder of the University of Pennsylvania. No recordshave been found, however, to substantiate this tradition. Afterarriving in Philadelphia the tradition is that he boarded in thishouse for a number of years, occupying one of the rooms inthe attic. When he became more prosperous he removed to alarge residence on Market Street, between Third and FourthStreets, which was demolished many years ago. The house onSpring Street is said to have been one of the first brick dwellingsbuilt in Philadelphia, and was erected many years before Frank-lin lived in it.
