Description

UNIVERSITY AT MOSCOW IDAHO

Date: 1905 (undivided back) Source Type: Postcard Printer, Publisher, Photographer: Sherfey's Book Store Postmark: May 13, 1905, Moscow, Idaho Collection: Steven R. Shook Remark: The structure to the far right was the original Administration Building on the University of Idaho campus and housed university administration offices and classrooms. Total cost of construction was $131,068. The four story, 180-foot by 122-foot, red brick structure was built in stages. The east wing was completed in 1899, and auditorium and the third floor in 1900, and the west wing in 1902. The building faced northeast and the tower was 163 feet in height.

At approximately 2:30 am on March 30, 1906, a fire was discovered in the building. Evidence suggested that the fire began in the basement of the east wing of the building. Arson was suspected since some fire hoses inside the building were found to be cut and nozzles were missing from some hoses. The perpetrator was never caught. The building was insured, the university collecting $135,000. The insurance money was used to fund the construction of Morrill Hall, the university's first agricultural building. The present Administration Building is located on the same site.

The School of Mines was also referred to as the Engineering Building and was located about one block east-southeast of the Administration Building (building visible in center of this image). The building no longer exists and Niccolls Hall, also referred to as the Home Economics Building, now [2015] stands on the site.

Construction of the Gothic designed building was initiated in 1901 and was completed in 1902 at a total cost of $28,000, with funding for the construction provided by the state. The brick building consisted of a basement and three floors. The footprint of the building was 60-feet by 108-feet, and total floor area was 20,982 square feet.

The structure was razed in 1951 due to safety and building code compliance issues.
