Summary
[edit]DescriptionUniversity Station, Birmingham - geograph.org.uk - 1627420.jpg |
English: University Station, Birmingham Pre-electrification, the photo is taken from train leaving for Five Ways and Birmingham, on the sharp curve that is the station platforms. Care has to be taken getting on and off trains because of 'the gap'. The camber was to allow express trains to navigate through the station at speed.
Notice on the left the grassy area between the station and canal. There may have been plans in the past to have a terminus platform, to assist with a busy timetable. There were at times more trains on the northern section between New Street and Four Oaks, and having a place to 'park' trains may have helped. Instead trains would often run to Bournville, then take loop line (freight) through Kings Heath and Moseley to return to New Street. |
