Summary
[edit]DescriptionUniversitätskapelle rechts.jpg |
English: The right-hand (western) stained glass window in the University Chapel of the choir at the Freiburg Minster dates to 1524-27, according to accounting documents. The pictorial theme relates to the university, which was founded in 1457 and arranged for its own chapel at the minster, in part as a burial site for professors, and set the designs. Although the artist is unknown, art historians have pointed to the influence of Augsburg woodcuts produced in the circle around Hans Burgkmair. In 1876, the panes were washed off and newly painted by Heinrich Helmle (1829-1909).
The patrons of the four university disciplines are depicted before a wooded mountainous background. On the left, St. Luke, according to tradition a physician and dressed in the garb of contemporary doctors, faces St. Catherine of Alexandria, the patron of philosophy. On the right, John the Evangelist, the patron of theology, faces St. Ivo, the patron of jurisprudence wearing the clothing of contemporary jurists. The cult of Ivo, the defender of paupers, widows, and orphans who was born in Bretagne in 1253, was particularly widespread in France. |
