Summary
[edit]DescriptionUniversitätskapelle links.jpg |
English: The left-hand (eastern) stained glass window in the University Chapel of the choir at the Freiburg Minster dates to 1524-27, according to accounting documents. The pictorial theme relates to the university, which was founded in 1457 and arranged for its own chapel at the minster, in part as a burial site for professors, and set the design. Although the artist is unknown, art historians have pointed to the influence of Augsburg woodcuts produced in the circle around Hans Burgkmair. In 1876, the panes were washed off and newly painted by Heinrich Helmle (1829-1909).
On the left, the 12-year-old Jesus is depicted teaching in the temple before rabbis (Luke 2:41-52). He sits on a throne before a background of pink Renaissance-era architecture. On the right, Mary and Joseph approach with a bearded rabbi. The seated man dressed in green with a violet beret was identified by Fritz Geiges as Archduke Albert VI, the founder of the university. In the arches above the images, angels hold the coat of arms with the imperial double-headed eagle. The coats of arms of the Austrian lands appear at the beginnings of the arches. |
