Description |
English: The U.S. Sanitary Commission, first organized in New York City, would officially be established as a private, civilian relief agency by federal legislation in 1861. Its purpose was to provide sanitary and medical assistance and supplies to the Union Army during the Civil War. Clara Barton, providing the same services through independent resources, wrote that her work and the work of the U.S. Sanitary Commission were "in perfect accord, mutual respect and friendliness," and she often used them for supplies and/or transportation. Despite this, she never identified or aligned herself as a member of the USSC or any other Civil War Relief Organization.
