Description

NPS/Patrick Myers

Today is Flag Day! This lesser-known holiday celebrates not only the birthday of our nation's flag, but more importantly the meanings behind it for the people of the United States. For over two centuries, countless people have laid down their lives to keep America's flag in the air, because of the values for which it stands.

“The things that the flag stands for were created by the experiences of a great people. Everything that it stands for was written by their lives. The flag is the embodiment, not of sentiment, but of history.” — Woodrow Wilson

Here are the meanings of the colors, stripes, and stars:

White - Purity and Innocence Red - Hardiness and Valor Blue - Vigilance, Perseverance and Justice

"The star is a symbol of the heavens and the divine goal to which man has aspired from time immemorial." (from a publication by the U.S. House of Representatives, 1977)

The United States flag flies over every National Park Service site, reminding us that in all the diversity of our parks and our people, we are united by the principles upon which our nation was founded. Happy Flag Day!
