Summary

[edit]
Description

City of Chicago was the first 767 to enter revenue service in September 1982. As widebody twinjets improved and gained the ability to fly across open oceans, City of Chicago kept up, being upgraded to enable United Airlines' launch of trans-Atlantic services in the early 1990s.

When stretched 767-300s and the new 777 took over European duty at United later in the 1990s, City of Chicago was placed into dedicated 3-class premium service between New York City and California. It was at that time that I flew the route several times a year - including stints on her. My very last run on that route, on 1 November 2003 on an LAX-JFK-LHR routing, took place on her - complete with a Friends marathon on board.

City of Chicago was retired in early 2004, and the 767-200 fleet was retired at United in 2005. However, the 2010 Continental merger would bring Continental's 767-200 fleet into United service for a few years.

From this angle, aside from the painted-over titles and logos, this old bird still looks ready to fly me to New York City all over again. But a closer look reveals some of her parts removed, other exposed parts left to rot, and the right front windscreen missing. Chances are she may be just a gigantic, poorly ventilated bird nest inside (with toxic smells to match), and scrapping may be the ultimate fate, a sad end to a historic aircraft.

My travels in 2012 had taken me to Boeing's Everett assembly facility, where all 767s, including this one, are built. Appropriate to end the year by paying a visit to one of my favorite Everett-built travel companions of the past.
