Summary
[edit]DescriptionUnitarian Universalist Association Headquarters (7200950382).jpg |
25 Beacon Street is home to Unitarian Universalist Association. Unitarian Universalism, which was formed in 1961 from the joining of Unitarian and Universalist movements, has been my own faith in recent years. It has a liberal worldview, has no creed, and evolves around seven basic principles that stress respect for other people and the surrounding environment. Many of the Unitarian Universalist traditions are rooted in Christianity, since Unitarians were originally a heretic sect of Christianity that did not believe in the Holy Trinity (hence the name), but today's Unitarian Universalism is no longer Christian, though it can allude to teachings of Christianity and other major religions (not to mention older, Earth-based beliefs) and draw from their wisdoms. Eliot Hall is the main conference room and sanctuary at the headquarters. The plaque on the wall honors three civil rights pioneers who were killed on Bloody Sunday in Selma, Alabama, in 1965; from left to right, they are Jimmy Lee Jackson, a local African-American Baptist preacher, Rev. James J. Reeb, a Unitarian Universalist minister who joined Jackson in Selma, and Viola Gregg Liuzzo, a Detroit Unitarian Universalist layperson who traveled to Selma to assist Unitarian Universalist ministers and was killed by the Ku Klux Klan while driving between Selma and Montgomery. The Unitarian Universalists pride themselves in their support of civil rights. Currently their main areas of concern are basic rights for migrant workers (the annual General Assembly, being held in Phoenix in June for 2012, will address it heavily), as well as equal rights for LGBTs. In fact, in 2004, this room was one of the venues to officiate same-sex weddings the moment same-sex marriages became legal in Massachusetts; as Massachusetts was the first state in the US to legalize same-sex unions, history was indeed made here. |
